Moore Stephens Night Run Draws Record Entry
The popular Moore Stephens Night Run organized by Maties Athletics Club as part of e'Bosch Heritage Project for the third consecutive year is going from strength to strength and almost doubled the field on last year entry with a record entry of 1200 athletes this time.
First across the line in the 10km run on Wednesday, 16 September was Thom Lusaseni form iTheko Lion of Africa Club in a time of 30:32 with club mate Siviwe Mkombi six seconds behind him and Akhona Makila from K-Way VuB finishing third a further 16 seconds back.
Zintle Xiniwe (FNB) was first in the ladies’ open section in a time of 34:32 while Thembeko Mendi (RCS Gugs) was the first junior male in a time of 33:19 while Sharon Chwala (RCS Gugs) was the first junior lady in a time of 43:29.
The concept of a night run seems to be gaining ground judged from the field of young and old taking part in this exhilarating experience over the 5km and 10km event. This lovely route which started at Coetsenburg Stadium took runners along the Eerste River and through the famous Stellenbosch Avenue winding through some of the oldest neighbourhoods and finally turning back just before the beautiful Jonkershoek area.

Die Braak Heritage Day cricket match commemorates 150 year old first match
This Heritage Day will see the commemoration of the first cricket match played on The Braak 150 years ago between teams from Zonnebloem College in Cape Town and a team of Stellenbosch boys.
During July 1865 a team from Zonnebloem College then an elite school for African aristocrats who enjoyed liberal Christian education arrived in novel fashion by train and stayed over for a few days. They were enthusiastic cricketers and eventually played a game against a group of Stellenbosch boys, which was chronicled as the first match ever played on Die Braak. No result is available of the match but the train trip and match is referred to in reports by two Zonnebloem school boys, Walter Monde and Nathaniel Cohon who were part of the entourage.
A cricket pitch was eventually laid in Die Braak and it subsequently became a popular venue for cricket matches. This was illustrated by a visitor who reported in 1880 that there were “large tents for refreshments erected in various parts, flags were flying and crowds of gaily dressed people were moving about, many of whom had just arrived in the early train from town … in the afternoon … the greasy pole climbing and other sports were gone on with”.
Research on this historical match was done by Dr Janet Hodgson and published as a MA dissertation in 1975, at the University of Cape Town under the title A History of Zonnebloem College, 1858-1870. She describes the sport as follows: “Cricket embodied the spirit of fair play, of working as a team, of respect for discipline, and of abiding by the rules. How you played the game was what counted, not winning. For the boys, the heroic efforts needed in this field of contest were comparable to those required by a warrior. The difference was that this was a gentleman’s game where physical courage was manifested through right behaviour rather than bravery in battle.”
The match takes place between 12:00 and 14:00 on 24 September at Die Braak. It forms part of the e’Bosch Heritage Festival and is organized dr Francois Cleopas from Stellenbosch University. Rumour has it that any batsman worth his salt should not only score a perfect six on Die Braak but also break a window across the road.
More information can be obtained at [email protected] or see www.heritagefestival.co.za.

e'Bosch Press Release #011/2015
Press Release: 18 August 2015
e'Bosch unites communities and promotes cultural tourism
The e’Bosch Heritage Programme aimed at uniting all die peoples of the Stellenbosch district through the creation of a shared culture, is fast developing into an effective tourism tool for the region.
Now in its fifth year of existence and unique in its own right on the South African cultural landscape, Heritage Month September will see communities from a diverse range of at least ten defined “dorpies” that include local neighbourhoods and hamlets, offer a large variety of art, culture and sport programmes for locals and tourists alike.
“Since the first festival five years ago, e’Bosch has become an institution in Stellenbosch where residents of Stellenbosch and visitors celebrate the rich diversity of all the communities of the greater Stellenbosch region and during which the history, art and culture, sports and entertainment that the city of oaks offer, are supported and showcased with passion,” says Annemarie Ferns CEO of Stellenbosch 360 the town’s tourism authority.
Encompassing some 30 projects with 50 events this year, the e’Bosch programme kicks off on 1 September with an awards ceremony presented by the mayor of Stellenbosch and the rector of the Stellenbosch University to honour role players in the various communities for their endeavours to develop the youth.
Other cultural highlights include the e’Bosch Heritage Lecture, to be given by Trevor Manuel, previous minister of Finance, on 17 September at the Stellenbosch University Museum, and the annual, very successful e’Bosch School Choir Festival, on 18 September in the Kruiskerk in which many local schools will participate.
Throughout the month the ten towns Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Jamestown, Kayamandi, Klapmuts, Kylemore, Pniël, Raithby, Stellenbosch Central, Vlottenburg, and the farming community will present their own programmes which include photo exhibitions, storytelling sessions, a drama and poetry festival, handcraft show, and much more.
Sport is a very important component of the e’Bosch activities, with events that include the Root 44 Park Run with a heritage theme on 5 September at Audacia Farm; the annual Moore Stephens Night Run (5 km and 10 km) on 17 September at Coetzenburg; and on 24 September the Spier Eerste Canoe Challenge from the suspension bridge in Mostertdrift to Spier Estate on the Eerste River.
The highlight of the e’Bosch heritage events in town is the annual River Festival on the banks of the Eerste River on Heritage Day, 24 September with such diverse events as a tube race on the river and a performance by local artists, including the choir of Stellenbosch University, all promising great entertainment for the whole family.
Festival-goers can also enjoy local quality art, craft and food stalls, while the youngsters can try their hand at a stokbroodbraai and decorating muffins. Free braai facilities are available for groups and families on the banks of the river, with braai packs for sale at one of the stalls, while the Stellenbosch Airfield also offers a Fly-in-and-Braai event on the day, with shuttles available from the airfield to the river festival.
On this day, local art galleries and the university’s visual arts department will also be participating in The Last Thursdays’ early evening programme with exhibitions and entertainment with a heritage flavour in local art galleries.
An interesting novelty on this year's programme will be a commemoration cricket match on the Braak on 24 September between the Zonnebloem and other local boys’ schools to celebrate the first similar match played here 150 years ago.
“The variety of activities during e’Bosch attracts visitors from the Western Cape and even further afield to enjoy the festival with Stellenbosch locals. Stellenbosch 360 develops and supports several initiatives to promote cultural tourism as a vehicle for economic empowerment. Cultural Tourism’s unique characteristic is that it focuses on inherent talent, as well as each community's rich cultural heritage,” says Ferns.

e'Bosch Persverklaring #009/2015
Persverklaring: Eikestadnuus
28 Julie 2015

The climax of the e’Bosch heritage events in town is the annual River Festival on the banks of the Eerste River on Heritage Day, with such diverse events as a canoe and a tube race on the river, as well as a performance by local artists including the choir of Stellenbosch University, all promise great entertainment for the whole family. Festival-goers can view local art by Kickstart project, enjoy the art and craft stalls, munch away at the best of local produce, and while the youngsters enjoy stokbrood braai and decorating muffins, dad can light a fire for a braai, or the family can taste what the potjiekos competition has to offer. At the Stellenbosch Airfield a Fly-in and braai event is on the cards for Heritage Day.
Sport is a very important component of the e’Bosch activities, with events including a world rugby cup tournament at Markotter sport fields; an u.11 soccer tournament; the Root 44 Park Run on 5 September with a heritage theme; and the annual highlight, the Moore Stephens Night Run (5km and 10 km) on 17 September at Coetzenburg.
Heritage Day will have its own quota of sporting fun: canoe and tube races on the Eerste River, the VriendsCUP tournament on the Braak, as well as the Paul Roos - Zonnebloem cricket match -- an anniversary of a match that occurred on the Braak a 100 years ago - the Cancer Fun Run and Walk in Pniël as well as the Spier Plaastrap and the Spier Riviertrap as cycling events.

In Stellenbosch, September and heritage are synonymous
September is Heritage Month and Stellenbosch will be enthusiastically celebrating its diversity of cultures with events varying from the historical, cultural to arts and crafts, sports and fun entertainment throughout this month.
The e’Bosch Heritage Project, which is now in its fifth year, has as its main aim the celebration of different cultures and heritages in all of its various communities - our 10 Dorpies - as well as a joint celebration of a new and unifying heritage on Heritage Day, 24 September, on the banks of the Eerste River.
The e’Bosch (Erfenis Stellenbosch) events kick off on 1 September with an awards ceremony presented by the mayor of Stellenbosch and the rector of the Stellenbosch University to honour role players in the various communities for their endeavours to uplift the youth.
Other cultural highlights include the e’Bosch Heritage lecture, to be given by Trevor Manuel, previous minister of finance on 17 September at the SU Museum, and the annual, very successful e’Bosch School Choir Festival on 18 September in the Kruiskerk. Come and listen to the more than 10 high schools and 16 primary schools of the Stellenbosch municipal district entrance the audience separately with their singing, and also together in a mass choir performance.
All of the 10 Dorpies will be abuzz with various activities during the month of September: Ida’s Valley will present a month long photographic exhibition of its history at the Ida’s Valley library; in Cloetesville there will be storytelling and various events for the youth and senior citizens throughout the month; Kayamandi will be holding a heritage day event at the Kayamandi Tourism Corridor on Sunday 27 September; in Kylemore, from 19 to 26 September, there will be an exhibition at the Kylemore Art Centre of work from the Imbali Youth Visual Literacy Project as well as a local crafts and flower show and an it their organic gardens will also be on display at the local schools; Pniël will celebrate the 172nd anniversary of its Congregational Church on Sunday 6 September, as well as promote their local museum and tea garden; Klapmuts will hold a heritage programme on 11 September; Raithby will hold a bring and braai day for the community on Heritage Day, while Vlottenburg will present a cultural tour of their hamlet on 26 September. The agricultural community has not been forgotten and the Farmworkers Homecraft Show at the Doornbosch Agricultural Hall is not be missed.
In town the Stellenbosch Museum will conduct a most interesting tour of places of worship that played a role in the history of Stellenbosch on 18 September. These include the Rhenish Church on the Braak, the NG Moederkerk in Drostdy Street, the Synagogue in Ryneveld Street, the mosque in Banghoek Road, as well as the Baptist Church in Merriman Avenue and Pniël’s majestic Congregational Church.
Skakel Eckhardt Bosch by 081 838 1756/[email protected] of Deon Botha by 083 959 5880/[email protected] vir meer inligting.

e'Bosch Press Release #005/2015
Press Release 15 June 2015
e'Bosch Heritage Project 2015 Awards to honour service to the youth
Individuals who make a significant impact on the lives of school-aged children in Stellenbosch and its surrounding 10 villages will receive honorary awards this year as part of the e'Bosch Heritage Project's annual recognition to those who made an outstanding contribution to the community.
Two persons will be selected per village - one younger and one older than 35 years - from nominations received from the residents of each village and Stellenbosch Central. The awards also aim to encourage all adults in the community to build assets and values in children's lives.
The e'Bosch organizers, in cooperation with the Stellenbosch Batebouers an organization which does a lot of work amongst the youth will manage the project. A convenor will be identified in each of the respective villages, who along with two other people acting as an Honorary Awards Committee will take responsibility for the nominations in each village.
After the public nominated their role models for the awards, the committee, in consultation with Prof. Matilda Burden of Stellenbosch University, will select two persons per village. They will receive their honorary awards on September 1 at the opening function of the e'Bosch Heritage Festival 2015 presented by the mayor of Stellenbosch and rector of the University of Stellenbosch. The areas where candidates for the award may be nominated include Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida's Valley, Kylemore, Pniël, Jamestown, Raithby, Vlottenburg, Klapmuts, Lynedoch, the farming community and Stellenbosch Central.
Nomination forms will be available after 16 June at any local library or from the local Honoray Awards Committe. The completed nomination forms must be submitted on or before 27 July 2015 at a local public library, or Eckhardt Bosch can be called at 081 838 1756 to make arrangements.
Guidelines which make individuals eligible for these awards are grouped into four main themes namely namely the support of school youth, empowering youth, setting boundaries and expectations and, finally, offering activities for constructive time management.
The first guideline covers the support to young people offered by individuals to families throug workshops on positive parenting, adults who reach out to the youth, and also people who support the neighborhood schools and young people. Regarding the second issue, namely empowerment individuals will be considered who create an environment for young people where they are empowered to play useful roles in the community, provide a service to the community or create a safe environment for young people.
The third theme is to create boundaries and expectations for school youth. It covers those who create an environment in which healthy boundaries and expectations are set for young people within the context of the home, school, peers and neighborhood, and encourage young people to develop their full potential.
The fourth theme is the encouragement of young people to use their free time constructively through the facilitation of creative activities such as music lessons, theater, art or hobbies. Furthermore, such a person will also assist the youth to join sports clubs, school and community programs.
For further information, call Deon Botha, chairman of Stellenbosch Batebouers network at 083 959 5880 or e-mail: [email protected].

e'Bosch Persverklaring #004/2015
Persverklaring 8 Junie 2015
Hoe besluit ‘n mens watter individu in jou gemeenskap kom in aanmerking vir so ‘n toekenning?

Hoe besluit ‘n mens watter individu in jou gemeenskap kom in aanmerking vir so ‘n toekenning?
Voorts kan so ‘n mens ook die jeug bystaan by sportklubs, skool en gemeenskap of jongmense of op ‘n geestelike of godsdienste terrein ondersteun.

e'Bosch Press Release #003/2015
Press Release: 8 May 2015
Growing enthusiasm for e’Bosch School Choir Festival
The e’Bosch School Choir Festival to be staged in September as part of the annual Stellenbosch Heritage Festival has gained so much momentum that the record number of schools wishing to participate this year necessitates the urgent appointment of additional choir directors.
Such is the enthusiasm that some 25 schools – 10 of which are secondary schools – have already indicated that they want to be part of the fourth annual e’Bosch School Choir Festival to be staged in the Kruiskerk on 17 September this year.
At least five of the primary schools wanting to participate do not have any access to musical instruments and are in need of a choir director. The organisers are therefore making an urgent appeal for experienced choir directors to come forward and also for musical instruments to be donated. Please contact Dirkie van der Merwe at [email protected] if you would like to offer any assistance.
The choir festival is not a competition and is organised in such a way that each school performs two songs of its own choice, whether in Afrikaans, English or isiXhosa. The primary schools then sing together, with the secondary schools following suit. The evening is concluded with the National Anthem sung together with the audience. The experienced Marijke Roos will be the main conductor, with Zorada Temmingh on the organ.
The school choir festival is one of the numerous projects organized by the e’Bosch Organizing Committee as a celebration of our individual and collective heritage of all the different and joint cultural traditions in the greater Stellenbosch area. The mission of the e’Bosch heritage project includes contributing to a greater understanding between different views and ultimately leads to the development of a joint culture that will represent the greater community in the future.
“The world crisis of inequality can inter alia be addressed at its roots by providing opportunities where people can get to know, appreciate and respect one another. The e’Bosch School Choir Festival provides such an opportunity, but in the process, also creates an opportunity for personal expression,” says Dr Sias Mostert, chairman of the e’Bosch Executive Committee.

e'Bosch Persverklaring #002/2015
2 April 2015
Persverklaring Eikestadnuus

e'Bosch Press Release #001/2015
20 March 2015
Press Release: Eikestadnuus
e’Bosch KickstART Project takes art education to Stellenbosch communities
Art education will be taken into the communities of Stellenbosch this year by KickstART in support of the Stellenbosch e’Bosch Heritage Project.
KickstART the DeLoitte-funded educational arm of Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust aims to have at least one mobile art classroom on the road soon which will provide free art classes at schools in the symbolic e’Bosch ‘10 dorpies’ in the greater Stellenbosch region.
“Our mobile classroom is planned on top of a number of our students’ exhibitions and a workshop scheduled for the June/July holidays. The mobile classroom will provide art tuition during free class times and over weekends at various schools in the Stellenbosch region. On top of this we will kick off with our normal program this year with an exhibition of our current students’ work starting on 16 April followed by our annual workshop for Grade 10 learners at the Stellenbosch University Museum during the June/July school holidays. This workshop normally attracts some 100 or more learners. The theme for the workshop this year will revolve around places of worship through the mediums of photography and sketches. Selected artworks from this exercise will be displayed at various venues during the e’Bosch Heritage Festival in September this year,” says Andi Norton Project Manager of KickstART.
“In South Africa the majority of our youth grow up in communities where poverty, crime and various social ills prevail. The result is that they are exposed to many risks including family conflict and community violence which leads to high-risk behaviour that poses a threat to their well-being and development. With little hope, future vision or dreams this age group are at risk of becoming school dropouts feeding the already alarming statistics and cycles of crime and social ills.
“Creative young people often do not choose maths or science as subjects because they are not interested in them and many believe that without these subjects you won’t be able to get a proper job. This partly contributes to the high dropout rate at Grade 10 level when high school learners must make their final subject choices. KickstART aims to make a long-term contribution and commitment to the development of vulnerable youngsters. We therefore actively search for creative youngsters in and around Stellenbosch high schools and introduce them to a range of job opportunities or career prospects within the creative industries. Our vehicles are interactive workshops facilitated by leaders in these fields, mobile art classrooms, and showcasing students’ creations at various public venues. Each year a number of bursaries are also awarded to promising students who further their studies under the guidance of a personal mentor appointed by us,” says Andi.
“We are delighted by KickstART’s pro-active approach and especially taking art education to the communities of all the dorpies in the Stellenbosch region,” says Johann Murray Chairman of the e’Bosch Steering Committee.
“This certainly supports our e’Bosch mission to get absolutely all the Stellenbosch communities involved. By learning, working and playing together we, children and grownups, will get to know and trust each other. This is the only way to make our town a place where visitors and residents alike are made to feel welcome, at home and secure,” says Johann.
KickstART is one the some 25 projects run as part of the e’Bosch Heritage Project now in its fifth year of operation. The initiative is run by a group of some 40 volunteers with their projects reaching fruition mainly in the month of September and which culminates in the e’Bosch River Festival on Heritage Day 24, September. At present the e’Bosch Steering Committee has representation from at least 10 defined cultural groups or ‘dorpies’ in the greater Stellenbosch Region. They are Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Pniel, Idas Valley, Kylemore, Vlottenburg, Klapmuts, Jamestown, Raithby, Stellenbosch Central and the Farming Community.
The e’Bosch movement aims to make Stellenbosch a place where visitors and residents alike all enjoy a mutual culture of belonging alongside existing cultural traditions.
