e'Bosch Schools Choir Festival • 2019 • e'Bosch-skoolkorefees
On 14 September 2019 a combined primary and secondary e’Bosch Schools Choir Festival was presented at the Coetzenburg Centre at Stellenbosch University. Under the management of Johann Murray, Brent Reynolds, Elwin September, and Fiona Grayer, 18 primary schools and 4 secondary schools united under a common denominator which is choral singing.
Through the heritage category Music, the e’Bosch Heritage Project seeks to build mutual respect and trust, and to unite all the peoples of the greater Stellenbosch region by encouraging music events in all neighbourhoods, while at the same time, creating a unifying culture and hence a unified future heritage through the medium of music events. We believe that the e’Bosch Schools Choir Festival, more than any other event, achieved the aims and objectives of the projects for the heritage category Music in that it involved such a wide range of communities in mutual co-operation culminating in a successful festival concert.
The fundamental objective of this project is to bridge social and geographical boundaries and unite our youth under one common denominator. Participating choirs are encouraged to celebrate their musical heritage and also share this heritage with other choirs thereby fostering a mutual respect for the diversity within our society. Over the months of preparation, schools were divided into clusters of four or five schools in each cluster. Four joint cluster rehearsals were held over this period which encouraged cooperation, the sharing of knowledge and cultural backgrounds, and the opportunity for learners and teachers from the various participating schools to get to know one another. Each cluster performed two items at the festival concert.
All clusters combined in a mass choir performance of The United Light (“The e’Bosch Song”), composed by Stellenbosch-based conductor, teacher, and composer Xander Kritzinger. The concert was concluded with the singing of the South African National Anthem in which audience members were invited to participate.

e'Bosch Secondary Schools Choir Festival • 2018 • e'Bosch-skoolkorefees (Sekondêre skole)
The e’Bosch Secondary Schools Choir Festival was held on 19 September 2018 in the Stellenbosch Town Hall. Under the leadership of Johann Murray, Wikje du Preez and Elwin September, altogether 282 learners from eight participating high schools were divided equally into two smaller choirs who practised together, with each one performing three songs. The two sub-choirs combined for a mass choir which performed the e’Bosch Song written, The United Light, and the National Anthem. The event was attended by about 680 people.
Through the schools, communities are exposed to cultural and musical performance, hence audience development and education. They are also introduced to the aims and vision of the organisation, such as the values of heritage and community outreach as well as social development.

e'Bosch Primary Schools Choir Festival • 2018 • e'Bosch-skoolkorefees (Primêre skole)
A very successful e’Bosch Primary Schools Choir Festival was held on 25 August 2018 at the Stellenbosch University Coetzenburg Centre under the leadership of Tarnia van Zitters and the help of Elwin September as logistics coordinator.
Altogether 21 primary school choirs (424 learners) and the US Wind Ensemble (50 members) made up the programme for this event. The schools were grouped into six clusters that each performed two songs of their choice. The mass choir performed the prescribed work, Song for Mandela, by Anun Francis, and the National Anthem, accompanied by the SU Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Pamela Kiernan. The event was attended by about 500 people.
The e’Bosch Heritage Project has managed to assist 15 communities to form school choirs, a project which has the potential to mould our youth in becoming disciplined and responsible role models.
The communities reached include Klapmuts, Elsenburg, Koelenhof, Vlottenburg, Raithby, Jamestown, Devon Valley, Ida’s Valley, Cloetesville, La Colline, Franschhoek, Pniël, Simondium, Kylemore and Stellenbosch Central.
The orchestral exposure gave the event a boost, which also created a higher standard of performance. The choir festival has enabled diverse communities to unify around song.
