e'Bosch Heritage Day Celebrations a Festival for All
Old and young can look forward to sport, entertainment and cultural activities on Heritage Day, 24 September on the banks of the Eerste River in The Avenue, Stellenbosch, which will be closed off for the day's e'Bosch River Festival . The highlight of the day's activities will certainly be the live music stage with some 20 sing and dance items performed by mostly artists from Stellenbosch communities. Major attractions will be solo artists such as Martie Hauptfleisch, Luna Paige, and Erik Rust, the bands Amazinc Live, Mustard Seed and the ATKV Riel Dancers.
A large number of local communitiy craft and food stalls with demonstrations of their skills will be offered plus a variety of entertainment for children. A beer and wine garden for adults and barbecue facilities are available to all throughout the day. Wood and meat will be on sale at the River Festival venue.
Arts and crafts exhibitions of a variety of organizations from the region will also be on display throughout the day in the Ou Landbousaal on the banks of the Eerste River. If enough rain falls before the weekend, the annual Spier Eerste River Canoe Challenge from the suspension bridge in Mostersdrift to the Spier Wine Estate and the popular tube race from the same start to Piet Retief Bridge will also take place. For the avid cyclists there is a mountain bike route starting from the festival site to Spier Wine Estate and back. A ' Plaastrap' cycle tour will also be held at Spier for children from the farming communities.
The Stellenboch town square Die Braak will see a lot of activity with the VriendsCup Games attended by some 600 children from local schools and the 1st Stellenbosch Scouts building a Hourglass Signal Tower to commemorate their centenary celebrations. Adjacent to Die Braak in front of the Toy Museum there will be a Friendship Tree Planting ceremony attended by the Stellenbosch mayor and representatives of all the Stellenbosch dorpies.
Elsewhere on the same day there are also events staged by local communities such as the Kayamandi e'Bosch under-11 Soccer Day; the Klapmuts Olympic Art, Culture and Culinary Day; Raithby e'Bosch Domino, Braai & Children Fun Day; Pniël Family Fun Run; and Kylemore Potjiekos Competition.
Not to be forgotten in the run-up to the Heritage Day festivities is the flagship Distell Foundation's e'Bosch School Choir Festival on Thursday and Friday evening. This iconic event is now presented as two performance by a total of 800 learners from 20 different schools. The high school performance will take place at 18:30 at the Stellenbosch High School in Jannasch Street, on Thursday, 22 September and the primary school performance will in the Kruiskerk in Ryneveld Street at 18:30 on Friday, 23 September. Both performances can be attended for free.
Residents from all the villages in the region namely Cloetesville, Ida's Valley, Jamestown, Kyamandi, Klapmuts, Kylemore, Pniël, Raithby, Stellenbosch Center, Vlottenburg and several farming communities will be represented this year in one way or another at the e'Bosch Heritage Day Festivities.
The mission of the e'Bosch Heritage Project is to build mutual respect and trust and to unite all in Stellenbosch and its environs through participation of its neighborhoods or 'dorpies' and hence create a unified future heritage for all its peoples.
