VriendsCup Games 27 September 2017
As the brainchild of Ubabalo, Eikestadnuus and the main sponsor, CSV Construction, this initiative was held for the first time in May 2010. It is also supported by the University of Stellenbosch’s departments of Student Housing, the Student Representative Council and Matie Community Service (MGD). What makes the VriendsCUP so unique and the first of its kind, is the fact that teams are mixed, and not from only one school. The main purpose of the VriendsCUP is to build bridges and to develop interaction between the learners, parents and teachers of schools in the various local communities. Therefore, none of the participants need to be excellent sportsmen or women. Any learner that wants to have a go at a new sport, get some game time or simply make new friends while kicking or throwing a ball around is welcome. The event caters specifically for u.14 and u.15 boys and girls. The twelve High Schools in the area are invited to nominate 50 players of which 25 must be boys and 25 must be girls (except the schools with only boys or girls) Total potential of 600 learners as participants. The learners of participating schools are divided and mixed into different teams. The teams are each adopted by students and Ubabalo coaches, who will assist them and help with transport, and the coaching and managing of the teams. All participants receive a beautiful medal for their participation, as well as something to eat and drink, all sponsored by CSV Construction. This event was staged this year at Rhenish Girls High School on 27 September, 2017.
